What we collect
Account email, hashed password (or Google ID for OAuth), the chess usernames you link, the games we import on your behalf from Chess.com and Lichess, your interactions with ChessIQ features (page views, puzzle attempts), and basic device metadata for analytics.
Data about your opponents
When we import your games, those games necessarily include your opponents' usernames and moves - the same data Chess.com and Lichess publish on their public APIs. We process this data only to analyze the game from your perspective. We do not build profiles for opponents, do not contact them, and do not surface their data outside the context of your own games. If you are an opponent and want your username removed from a game we hold, contact support@chessiq.io.
How we use it
To analyze your games, generate insights and recommendations, operate the service, send transactional email (password resets, billing receipts), and improve ChessIQ.
Lawful basis (EU / UK users)
We rely on contract to provide the service you signed up for, legitimate interest to keep the product secure and operating, and consent for any non-essential analytics. You can withdraw consent or object to processing at any time by writing to support@chessiq.io.
Payments
Billing is handled by Stripe. We never see your card number. Stripe stores payment details and shares back limited metadata (subscription status, plan, period dates) which we cache to gate Premium features.
Sharing
We do not sell your data. We share data only with the processors that operate the product: Stripe (billing), Resend (transactional email), Sentry (error monitoring), Railway and Neon (hosting and database), and Chess.com / Lichess (the public APIs we read on your behalf).
Cookies and similar technologies
We use first-party session cookies to keep you signed in and a small set of first-party analytics cookies to understand which features get used. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Your browser settings can block or clear these at any time.
Retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove your games, analysis, and personal data from our production database within 30 days. Backups are rotated on a 30-day cycle, after which residual copies are gone.
Your rights
You can update your email and chess usernames in Settings, request a data export or correction by writing to support@chessiq.io, or permanently delete your account in Settings -> Danger Zone. Deletion removes your games and analysis from our database. EU / UK / California users additionally have the right to access, rectify, port, restrict, and object to the processing of their data, and to lodge a complaint with their local supervisory authority.
Children
ChessIQ is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. We require an age confirmation at signup. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact support@chessiq.io and we will delete the account.
